Swon Floo

We have been so inundated with information about the swine flu. Our school superintendent has made 2 phone calls to all households reminding us the importance of hand washing. Teachers also had to discuss proper hand washing techniques and show a video from YouTube on how this is done.

So of course, curious Mackenzie has been asking what this is all about. She keeps calling it the swon flu and I've told her that it's called the swine flu. And the conversation went something like this:

Mackenzie: Did you know that a 3 year old boy died in Texas from the swon flu? I heard it on the radio this morning.

Mom: Swine flu. And yes I heard that too.

Mackenzie: Why do they call it swine flu?

Mom: Swine is another name for pigs, and the germs started with the pigs.

Mackenzie: Well then, they should just call it pig flu instead of swine flu. That's much easier to say and remember than swon flu!

So the next day . . .
In school she has been learning about farms, pigs, reading different stories about The Three Little Pigs and the children were to write something relating to pigs. The class had brainstormed what kinds of things they could say and this is what my child wrote about:

"The pigs- they hav a swon floo. We wil git sic."

Now mind you that all the other kids wrote about how cute pigs are, that they are pink and like to roll in mud, they have curly tails etc. Not mine! Her teachers and I laughed so hard! Hey, she is relating what she's learned in school and making connections to her world! Gotta love the mind of a Kindergartener!
